North Field Expansion Project Qatar

North Field Production Sustainability Project (NFPS)

End User: Qatargas

Qatar Petroleum is developing North Field East (NFE) – the world’s largest-ever liquified natural gas (LNG) project. Based about 80km off the Qatar peninsula, North Field was first discovered in 1971 and brought on-stream in 1991.

It is believed to be the biggest non-associated natural gas field in the world and is a geological extension of Iran’s South Pars/North Dome Gas-Condensate field – the world’s largest natural gas field. It spans an area of over 6,000km2.

The two expansion phases at the North field — NFE and NFS — are expected to cost up to $50 billion. The first expansion phase, NFE, will scale up the emirate’s LNG production capacity to 110 million tpa by 2026. The second phase — NFS — aims to further ramp up its LNG production capability to 126 million tpa, up from the current 77 million tpa nameplate capacity.

The North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) Offshore Compression Complexes Project is designed to sustain the production of the North Field.  The project includes two of the largest fixed steel jacket compression platforms ever built, flare platforms, interconnecting bridges, living quarters and interface modules.
